American Airlines Wide Body Hangar Facility, 1992 OCEA
Share |

When it was completed in 1992, the American Airlines Wide Body Hangar Facility (at DFW) was the largest cantilever hangar in the world. The building’s 282 ft. depth is spanned with cantilevered steel trusses, allowing for a column-free floor and a clear opening across the front of the building at the hangar doors. This $90 million, 780,000 sq. ft. structure was designed to accommodate seven wide-body aircraft simultaneously and, if needed, can hold a Boeing 747-400. The expansive door opening facilitated by the cantilevered design makes it possible to reconfigure the hangar for a variety of aircraft mixes. In addition to hangar space, the facility includes 419,000 sq. ft. of shop, office, and mechanical space, about 300,000 of which is air conditioned.

Because the hangar’s primary purpose is to handle FAA required Heavy C Check service, which involves complete overhaul of aircraft and up to 15,000 man-hours of aircraft mechanical work, the hangar contains state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance equipment.  The landing gear for the aircraft rest on electrically-operated elevators used to service the aircraft  without requiring the dangerous operation of jacking the aircraft up six or seven feet. The speed of docking and re-docking operations were considerably improved by suspending the work docks, which provided easy access to all service points of the aircraft without tying up work space at the floor level. Ten-ton capacity overhead bridge cranes are utilized for engine and flap removal. The hangar facility is designed to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accommodate demanding service schedules.
