April 2024

Corpus Christi, TX – In a landmark event aimed at fostering a new generation of engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Corpus Christi Branch successfully hosted its first-ever STEM Camp on March 2, 2024. The camp, tailored for high school students, offered an immersive experience into the diverse realms of civil engineering.

Students from various schools delved into a range of captivating activities designed to ignite their passion for engineering and hone their problem-solving skills. Divided into stations, participants explored City Planning, Concrete Design, Structural Wind Design, and Water Quality. Each station posed unique challenges, encouraging teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.

A key highlight of the event was the spirited competition among schools, with participants vying for recognition and awards. Scoring criteria encompassed the application of learned principles, collaborative efforts, creativity, functionality, and overall success in completing the challenges.

The success of the STEM Camp was made possible through the generous contributions of several sponsors. Coastal Bend College, Texas A&M University Kingsville, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, LAN Engineering, AIA, Uretek, WIMO’s, and Collier Engineering, along with Jr Event Sponsor Luz Ramos from Tensar, played pivotal roles in supporting the event and empowering aspiring engineers.

Professional engineers from leading firms volunteered their time to oversee challenge stations, providing invaluable guidance and mentorship to the budding engineers. Natilie Rodrigues from Freese and Nichols, Michelle Alvarez from Hanson, Carlos Martinez from N.
