Younger Members Committee Technical Webinar 3

October 9 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CDT

Join the ASCE Texas Section Younger Members Committee on Tuesday, September 9 for a Technical Webinar on “From Monitoring to Management: The Science Behind HGSD’s Subsidence Mitigation Strategy”. This session will be presented by Ashley Greuter PG (Director of Research and Water Conservation for the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and USA Affiliate for UNESCO’s Land Subsidence International Initiative).

Subsidence—land sinking—has wide-ranging impacts on flooding, infrastructure, and  water resources. The mission of the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District (HGSD) is to provide reasonable groundwater regulation based on the best available science to prevent further subsidence within Harris and Galveston counties. This mission is achieved by regulating groundwater withdrawal, conducting research and continuous monitoring, collaborating with regional water providers and local to state stakeholders, and promoting water conservation. HGSD’s current Science and Research Plan outlines priority themes and objectives that enhance understanding, advance predictive tools, and explore subsidence impacts. This talk will review subsidence mechanisms and monitoring methods, examine HGSD’s Science and Research Plan, describe recently completed projects, and present goals for future work.
