Each year, Engineers Week brings together professionals, students, and community leaders to recognize the impact of engineering on society. In Houston, Engineers Week (E-Week) 2026 stood out as a dynamic showcase of service, mentorship, and innovation, with a full slate of events designed to engage the community and invest in the next generation of engineers.

A Strong Start: The Run of Pi

E-Week kicked off on Saturday, February 21, with the annual Run of Pi, a 5K race that drew more than 300 participants. Blending fitness, networking, and philanthropy, the event served as both a community-building activity and a fundraiser. Proceeds from sponsorships and registrations directly supported engineering scholarships, reinforcing the profession’s commitment to developing future talent.

Recognizing Emerging Leaders

On Monday, February 23, the Young Engineer of the Year Reception honored 19 outstanding early-career professionals representing multiple engineering societies across the Greater Houston area. The program highlighted not only technical achievement but also leadership, service, and collaboration, qualities essential to the continued growth of the profession.

Investing in Future Engineers

The Student Awards Event, held Tuesday, February 24, brought together top students from leading institutions, including:

  • The University of Texas at Tyler – Houston Engineering Center
  • University of Houston
  • Texas Southern University
  • Prairie View A&M University
  • Rice University

Outstanding juniors and seniors from each university were recognized with scholarships, underscoring the importance of academic excellence and the profession’s responsibility to support and mentor emerging engineers.

Honoring Support Systems

Midweek activities included the Past Engineer of the Year Happy Hour on Wednesday, February 25. This event provided a meaningful reminder that professional success is often supported by strong personal networks, celebrating the families and partners who contribute behind the scenes.

Inspiring the Next Generation

A highlight of this year’s E-Week was the inaugural Introduce a Girl to Engineering Outreach, held Thursday, February 26 at SST Champion College Prep. The event engaged 36 students in an interactive program designed to spark interest in engineering careers.

The session began with an icebreaker, followed by a Q&A panel featuring four engineers with 7 to 30 years of experience across various disciplines. Panelists shared insights into their daily work, career journeys, and the rewards of the profession, while also offering advice to students considering engineering paths.

The event concluded with a hands-on straw tower competition, where students worked in teams to explore structural stability, creativity, and problem-solving. As a first-time initiative, the outreach was a resounding success and a promising step toward broadening participation in engineering.

A Fitting Finale

E-Week concluded on February 27 with the Engineer of the Year Gala, the week’s capstone event. The 2026 honoree, Brian Manning, P.E., was recognized for his long-standing leadership and service, including his role as a past president of the ASCE Houston Branch and ASCE Texas Section. His recognition exemplified the values of dedication, mentorship, and professional excellence.

Beyond the Week

In addition to E-Week activities, the organizing committee supported other impactful programs earlier in the year, including the DiscoverE Future City Competition at NASA Johnson Space Center on January 17 and the MATHCOUNTS Competition at Paetow High School on January 31. These events further extended outreach efforts to younger students, encouraging early interest in STEM fields.

Lasting Impact

Houston Engineers Week 2026 demonstrated that engineering extends far beyond technical design and analysis. Through mentorship, scholarship support, outreach, and professional recognition, the week highlighted the vital role engineers play in shaping both communities and future leaders.

From seasoned professionals to aspiring students, E-Week reinforced a shared commitment: building not only infrastructure, but also opportunity, leadership, and a stronger engineering community for years to come.
