Get to Know Your ASCE Texas Section
Student Members
Our selected student was asked to answer a list of questions to give section members a chance to learn more about our student members. This month we selected Leonel Aldape, Texas Tech Chapter Internal Vice President & Planner for the 2023 Student Symposium.
Have you ever been involved with ASCE at any level (Student Chapter, local Branch, Section, or Global Society)?
I have been in ASCE since my freshman year and became more active in the organization over time. My freshman year I only attended virtual meetings. My sophomore year I joined the steel bridge team, and now in my Junior year I am Internal Vice President of our student chapter at Texas Tech.
Who or What has inspired or is currently inspiring you?
My biggest inspiration will always be my parents, Francisco Aldape and Ana Aldape. They have worked all their lives to support the family and have always pushed me to get a higher education. They are always eager to hear about my studies and what I have accomplished. I owe everything I have to my parents.
What are some of your long-term goals? What about ASCE goals?
One of my goals, while I am in ASCE, is to become President of the Texas Tech Chapter. I hope to continue growing the chapter and increasing member involvement in ASCE conferences.
What is your go-to calculator?
My go-to calculator is the TI-36X. It has never failed me in the 3 years I have been at Texas Tech.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I spend my free time cooking, reading, and going thrift shopping. My apartment always has spaghetti cooking, and books lying around, and is decorated with what I find in the thrift store.
What is your favorite band?
My favorite band is Pink Floyd. I listen to the Dark Side of the Moon album daily without fail. Pink Floyd has the best psychedelic rock ever made.

Mountains or beach?
Mountains. I have had tons of fun hiking with my family in Colorado and it is something I hope to continue doing.
Give us your best (clean) joke
My wallet is like an onion. Every time I look at it, I cry.
