ASCE Houston Participates in “Shadow an Engineer Day”

ASCE Houston hosted “Shadow an Engineer Day” on Tuesday, November 12th, 2019. During this event, 32 students from Harmony School of Innovation-Katy visited local civil engineering firms and spent time with engineers to see what they really do.

The purpose of “Shadow an Engineer Day” was to allow students to experience firsthand what is involved in the field of civil engineering while observing the corporate skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are needed to be successful in the workplace. The students “shadowed” their respective engineering partner for the day to explore the different facets of engineering. Students were introduced to different disciplines of civil engineering and gained insight into the day-to-day engineering world.

Many thanks to the following eight engineering firms that donated their time and resources to make this event successful: BGE, Halff Associates, HR Green, HNTB, McDonough Engineering, Raba Kistner Consultants, RS&H and WSP.

ASCE Houston Branch YM Volleyball Tournament

The Houston Branch Younger Member Group hosted their 3rd annual YM Volleyball Tournament on Friday, October 25th. Although the weather was not ideal for sand volleyball, 12 teams representing various civil engineering firms around Houston attended this year’s event. The event took place at the newest volleyball bar in town, Powder Keg, which provided drinks and heaters to keep players warm.

The YM volleyball tournament provides young and young-at-heart engineers a chance to show off their competitive side while meeting other engineers in a casual setting. This event is always a great success with attendees requesting ASCE make it a semi-annual event.

In the end, Eustis Engineering won 1st Place with Halff Associates coming in a close 2nd!

Thanks to Eustis Engineering and Powder Keg for sponsoring the volleyball courts and the drinks.
