ASCE Dallas Branch Earth Day Texas Celebration 2017

April 21st and 22nd, 2017, ASCE Dallas Branch hosted an exhibition table at Earth Day Texas. This three-day free event took place in Fair Park in Dallas, Texas and is the largest event of its kind in the world. Earth Day Texas brings together environmental organizations, businesses, academic institutions, government agencies, speakers, interactive programming, and environmental subject matter experts along with live music and sustainable food and beer pavilions.

The primary goal of the Branch’s 2017 booth was to teach children about the importance of protecting and restoring watersheds. The Branch also encouraged booth visitors to investigate civil engineering as a profession and explained how we make a difference in the world, especially by practicing sustainable design.

For an enrichment activity, members instructed exhibit visitors to take a sheet of paper and crumple it up into a wad, un-crumple the paper and set it on the table. Next, visitors were instructed to select a brown or black marker, and gently shade the tops of the crumpled sheet of paper at regions that represented “mountain” ridges and divides. The visitors then used a blue marker to draw on regions that represented the rivers, lakes, and valleys. Once they were done they were instructed to hold up a spray bottle and simulate rain by misting the paper watershed while it is flat on the table to observe the water seep downhill through the paper. When the activity was finished, we explained the definition of a watershed and the importance of the maintaining the clean water that returns to the rivers, streams, lakes or oceans. This activity demonstrated that the water watersheds collect needs to be clean for the end waterbodies to be clean.

The Branch’s participation in Earth Day Texas also promoted the civil engineering profession, There were many adults and teenagers that had questions for our volunteers about what we do and how. Our volunteers were happy to educate them and help them discover what civil engineers can do in this world to make a difference for society and the environment.
