July Webinar: Arrowheads, Cemeteries, Cute Buildings, and Dilapidated Barns: What Are Cultural Resources and Why Are They Important?

July 11, 2017 | Noon - 1 PM CT | 1 PDH

Since cultural resources laws and regulations began to appear in the 1960s, the numerous revisions, ways in which agencies have adopted procedures, and general litigation has further mystified how cultural resources are interpreted and how the regulatory process should be implemented. Compounding this problem is the fact that the vast majority of the public knows little about cultural resources and their potential significance to a given project, a company’s public relations, a Native American tribe, or the community at large. Through this presentation, Mr. Stone will provide project examples and current regulatory policies and procedures to provide a better understanding of what cultural resources are and how they can impact a project.

Staff Changes at the Section Office

The Section welcomes a new Data Coordinator, Mike Sosa. Prior to joining ASCE Texas Section, he spent time working as an executive assistant for companies located in Columbus, Ohio and San Diego, California. He is a 2010 graduate of the College of Business at Ohio University with a B.S. in Sport Administration. Before that, he was raised in sunny San Diego and spent the vast majority of his free time on a baseball field or at the beach.

Mike has recently relocated to the Austin area from Columbus, Ohio with his girlfriend, Keah, and their adorable year-old puppy, Nollie. Outside of work he enjoys finding new places around town to try unique craft beer, catching a baseball game on the weekend, exploring local parks with his dog, and spending time enjoying the beautiful nature that Austin has to offer.

He is looking forward to interacting with members of the Section and helping them benefit from the Section’s resources as much as possible.

After four years, Communications Manager Annemarie Gasser, is moving on from her position with the Texas Section. Annemarie has taken a position at Hi-Rise Balloons as a Marketing and Communications Manager. She will miss working with the Section Leadership, staff, and the Members. "I am utterly grateful for the knowledge and relationships I formed while serving the Section. Our members and leadership have shown me what it means to belong. Thank you ASCE Texas Section, I wish the best for the organization and the membership in the future." said Annemarie.

June 7 is her last day. The Section is looking to fill her position, contact Lindsay O'Leary if you know someone looking for a Communications position.
