Description

Of numerous available methods, Langerman Foster Engineering Company (LFE) prefers using Pressure-Swell tests, the TxDOT PVR procedure, and engineering judgement to estimate potential vertical movement (PVM) of expansive soil.  To use pressure-swell (PS) test results to estimate PVM, LFE has found that a combination of the Excel computer program and an on-line integration engine can simplify the analysis.  This webinar will present how LFE prepares PS test results data in Excel for integration, how LFE uses an on-line integration engine to get PVM estimates, and the PVM estimates that result from using an on-line integrator.  The webinar will also present related calculations and laboratory test procedures that LFE believes can help the engineer judge the validity of the test results.

Presenter

Ottis Foster PE

Mr. Foster has practiced geotechnical engineering in the Greater Waco area generally since 1983, when he joined Trinity Engineering Testing Corporation (TETCO) after graduating with a BSCE from UT El Paso.  Having worked for various geotechnical engineering companies since then, and after 2 years as Executive Director of the Texas Section ASCE, he co-founded and works for Langerman Foster Engineering Company in WacoHe was honored to Chair the Texas Section ASCE Residential Foundation Oversight Committee, which in 2003 resulted in on-line publications titled Recommended Practice for the Design of Residential Foundations and Guidelines for the Evaluation and Repair of Residential Foundations.  He has presented several papers at Texas Section meetings, and has enjoyed the lively debates that often erupted among Texas geotechnical engineers at those meetings.
