Session: “Aerodynamics of Bridge Rehabilitation, Modifications & Retrofits” by Guy Larose PhD, P.Eng (Principal & Senior Technical Director, RWDI)
Description: Rehabilitation of bridges to extend their life and bring them up to current codes is a goal for many bridge owners but it can be expensive. Bridge microclimate and aerodynamic studies can inform a rehabilitation plan and result in more cost-effective rehabilitation. In the course of bridge operations, bridge owners must often add means-deterrent systems, fences, traffic barriers, messaging systems and light standards. All these ancillaries affect the aerodynamics of bridges. Without a holistic approach to analysis, solving one issue may create another. In the seismic zones of the world, many bridges are being retrofitted for seismic stability. This means doing construction work while the bridge is in operation. Without proper consideration of the construction process, this can lead to aerodynamic stability issues.
Participants will learn how rehabilitation of bridges can be better informed and more cost effective through bridge microclimate and aerodynamic studies; how ancillaries (traffic barriers, messaging systems, fences) added to bridges can affect bridge aerodynamics; the elements to consider in a holistic approach to analysis of bridge aerodynamics; and how the implementation of seismic retrofits can affect aerodynamic stability of a bridge.
