Session: Forensic Engineering – Case Study of an Exhaust Stack Collapse by Brent Brunner-Caple PE, Structural Engineering Consultant for Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates

This presentation will explain what forensic engineers do and illustrate the forensic engineering process with a case study on a structural collapse of an exhaust tower. This case study includes analysis of the tower design and construction, the dynamic response of the tower due to wind load and mechanical vibrations, and the chemical and metallurgical analysis of corroded members. We will walk through the step-by-step investigation of the events leading up to the collapse and determine what ultimately caused the structure to fail.
