Celebrate Engineers Week 2018 with ASCE Texas Section!

 

Several of the Branches across Texas will be hosting local events throughout the week. Please refer to the list below for more information about the events your local Branch is hosting. Engineers Week is February 18 - 24, 2018. Visit DiscoverE for additional resources.

 

Austin

Dallas

Wednesday 2/21 -Thursday 2/22

The ASCE Dallas Branch will host a table at the Perot Museum for E Week. At this table, the Dallas Branch YMs will be volunteering to help with the Penny Bridge competition. Volunteer shifts are usually 1-2 hours from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The penny bridge competition we will help run invites people try supporting as many pennies as possible across a span of several inches using only one sheet of paper. involves using 1 sheet of paper to support as many pennies as possible across a span of several inches. The Dallas Branch plans to make this a causal volunteer event with beer and networking. They will stay close to the Perot and end the event at a bar in Uptown.

Fort Worth

Tuesday, 2/20 from 10 am - 2 pm or 6 - 8 pm

  • Special opportunity: From 6-8 p.m., the Fort Worth Branch will host an event called Family Museum Nights where three schools will have access to the museum and can invite their school community to enjoy an evening at the museum.

Wednesday, 2/21 from 10 am - 2 pm

Thursday, 2/22 from 10 am - 4 pm

  • Special Opportunities
    • The Branch will host a Homeschool Afternoon event from 1 - 4 pm.
    • 1-2 engineers will have the unique opportunity to participate in an activity called Interview an Engineer, organized by TSPE. The Fort Worth Branch invites small groups of students to meet and do a speed interview with area engineers. The engineers would talk for 1-3 minutes about they do, then have 5 minutes to answer questions.  After that time, the group moves to another engineer, and the Alcon engineer would get another small group of students. The specific time frame for this activity is not quite final, but the Branch knows it will take place sometime around 11 am - 1 pm.

 

Northeast Texas

Tuesday, 2/20

The Northeast Texas Branch has decided to volunteer at the E-Week Banquet at Letourneau University on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. The event will be held at the Allen Family Student Center and includes insights from feature speaker, Dr. Steve Starrett, Dean of Engineering at LaTourneau. The expected attendance is 60 engineers and guests, and 100 students and teachers from high schools and colleges.  The Northeast Texas Branch will be helping coordinate the event, including setup, handing out awards, and more. The Branch also will be donating $250 to the event.

 

Friday, 2/23

On Friday, 2/23, the Northeast Texas Branch will split its members between helping at the MathCounts competition at UT Tyler, and the Engineers Day for 8th grade students at LeTourneau.

 

Rio Grande Valley

Saturday, February 17: What is E-Week?

  •  Introduce E-Week, what it is, and what the purpose of the “celebration” is. 

Sunday, February 18: What Do Engineers Do?

  • An interactive video will show various disciplines of engineering and how these collaborate to create the built environment we live in. 

Monday, February 19: #MotivationalMonday

  •  Feature a professor from one of our local institutions, most likely UTRGV, and include a blurb on what he/she had to overcome to get to where they are right now.
  •  Promote the screening for Dream Big (K-12 students only).

Tuesday, February 20: Technology in Engineering

  •  Present various technologies that would impact how we design, build and maintain our structures. 

Wednesday, February 21: #WomenInEngineering

  •  Feature our female presidential leadership at the national ASCE level while also featuring a female professional engineer and student leader from our community. 

Thursday, February 22: Dream Big

  •  Promote the special screening of Dream Big only for our professional members and university students.

Friday, February 23: #FlashbackFriday

  •  Feature the two stadiums being built in Edinburg and how it all began. 

Saturday, February 24: Sustainability

  •  Wrap up with a presentation of the significance of sustainability in engineering for our future leaders.

 

San Antonio

Our local TSPE chapter kicks off EWeek with a Proclamation Breakfast where the Young Engineer of the Year is recognized, and high school students who registered for the Engineer for a Day are assigned to the companies that will be hosting them.  This year, the Younger Members will be showing the Dream Big film immediately following the breakfast, before the high school students depart to allow them to watch the film as well. The event is free and open to the public.
