ASCE Texas Section hosted its Student Symposium where more than 430 students from universities across Texas and Mexico. Students convened to race concrete canoes, build steel bridges, participate in a career fair and attend seminars. The theme of the symposium was “Winning at Your Career.” The event took place at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas April 7 through 9, 2016 and was hosted at the United Supermarkets Arena with the concrete canoe races at Buffalo Springs Lake.

Participating universities included Angelo State University, Lamar University, Louisiana Tech University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Texas A & M University, Texas A & M University – Kingsville, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Arlington, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas at El Paso, The University of Texas at San Antonio, The University of Texas at Tyler, The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley, Universidad Autonoma Del Estado De Mexico, Universidad Le Salle, Universidad Panamerica, University of Houston and West Texas A & M University.

The symposium began with the steel bridge building competition at the United Supermarkets Arena. This competition teaches students real world engineering skills such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, serviceability, fabrication and erection processes, safety, esthetics, project management and cost. A successful team applies engineering principles and theory and effective teamwork. Students design and erect a steel bridge by themselves and are allowed to consult with faculty and advisors. The competition encourages innovation, professionalism and the effective use of structural steel.

Students attended seminars that followed the “Winning at Your Career” theme. In addition to visiting the career fair tables, students could choose to attend presentations on workplace communications, personal financial advice after graduation, understanding Robert’s Rules of Order, what to know before accepting a job offer, and tips for professional success.

Student teams displayed their concrete canoes, gave technical paper presentations and attended résumé workshops on Friday, April 8. ASCE Texas Section Past President Curtis B. Beitel P.E., C.F.M. presented a seminar on “How to Win at Your Career” detailing the benefits of being involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers and its tremendous advantages for professional development.

The Symposium concluded with concrete canoe racing at Buffalo Springs Lake and an awards banquet at the United Supermarkets Arena. The University of Texas at Austin won the Overall Concrete Canoe award and Texas A & M took first place in the steel bridge competition. The Texas Civil Engineering Foundation awarded Vanessa C. Hernandez a $5,000 scholarship for her academic achievement and community service both on and off campus.
