February 2017 Webinar: Overview of Water Treatment Research in the “Chellam Laboratory”

Prof. Chellam and his students perform research on advanced technologies for drinking water purification. Specifically, his group has contributed to our current understanding of fouling and contaminant control by pressure-driven membrane processes and (electro)coagulation for treatment of surface water and wastewater reclamation.

Prof. Chellam and his students perform research on advanced technologies for drinking water purification.  Specifically, his group has contributed to our current understanding of fouling and contaminant control by pressure-driven membrane processes and (electro)coagulation for treatment of surface water and wastewater reclamation.  This webinar will provide a broad overview of some of his recently completed and on-going research projects including:

(i) diagnosis of reverse osmosis fouling during water reuse by membrane autopsy

(ii) pretreatment for fouling control during desalination of brackish surface water by nanofiltration

(iii) virus removal from contaminated water by electrocoagulation

(iv) microfiltration of surface water

(v) electrocoagulation for boron removal from hydraulic fracturing wastewater.

About the Presenter:

Shankar Chellam

Texas A & M University

Shankar Chellam is the J. Walter “Deak” Porter ‘22 & James W. “Bud” Porter ‘51 Professor in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering. He completed BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry respectively from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India and MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering from Rice University in Houston.  Shankar also has seven years of “real-world” experience as a process engineer with J.K. Synthetics, India and as an applied research engineer in Montgomery Watson.  His research interests broadly include advanced technologies for drinking water treatment and wastewater reclamation.  A recipient of a National Science Foundation early CAREER award, Prof. Chellam has co-authored 99 peer-reviewed papers in archived journals, 12 book chapters, 23 invited presentations in conferences/workshops, 59 invited seminars in leading academic institutions, and 137 conference presentations.  Shankar currently serves as an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors Foundation and the North American Membrane Society.
